FIFA rewards Somali referee despite World Cup absence

Somali referee Omar Artan will receive his full tournament remuneration for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being unable to officiate at the competition after reportedly being denied entry into the United States, FIFA has confirmed.

Artan, who had been selected among the officials for the global football showpiece jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, was forced to miss the tournament entirely due to the travel setback.

In a move widely seen as a gesture of fairness and support, FIFA has decided to honour the complete compensation package due to the Somali official, ensuring he does not suffer financial losses from circumstances beyond his control.

World Cup referees are typically compensated under FIFA’s structured payment system, with final earnings usually determined after the tournament concludes.

While the exact amount to be paid to Artan remains undisclosed, sources indicate that FIFA will cover his full entitlement despite his inability to participate.

The development comes as a major disappointment for Somali football, as Artan had been on course to make history as the first referee from Somalia to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.

FIFA has not publicly revealed the specific reasons behind the entry denial, maintaining its policy of confidentiality regarding referee remuneration and administrative matters.

Nevertheless, the decision to pay Artan in full underscores the governing body's commitment to protecting officials affected by unforeseen circumstances.

Although denied the opportunity to achieve a historic milestone on football’s biggest stage, Artan's selection remains a significant achievement for Somali football and a testament to his rise within the international refereeing ranks.
