FG to share N574m sports equipment among 2000 primary schools in Nigeria

Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will tomorrow unveil and commission over N574m worth of sports equipment procured by the National Lottery Trust Fund for distribution to 2000 selected public primary schools in Nigeria.
Addressing the press yesterday in Abuja, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Engineer Abu Ahmed Gumel said the Vice-President will officially launch and commission the equipment at the Musa Shehu Yar’adua Events Centre in Abuja.
He disclosed that the purchase of the equipment was in fulfillment of the organisation’s mandate as an intervention agency established to promote the wellbeing of the citizenry through various good cause projects.
Gumel said “The Trust Fund was directed by government to procure and distribute graded and customized sports equipment to selected public primary schools across the country.
“The equipment are in respect of nine sports namely: Athletics, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, football, handball, badminton, judo and taekwondo.”
He said the key objective is to promote grass roots sports development considering the fact that there is the urgent need to replace the country’s aging athletes with younger athletes.
Gumel who is also the President of the Nigeria Olympics Committee, NOC, said the staff of the Trust Fund would closely monitor the equipment to ensure that they are being put to good use.
“A robust and comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system has been put in place to monitor and track the utilization of these equipment.
“Our in-house monitors will be visiting the schools on periodic monitoring and evaluation exercise,” he said.
20 public schools in the FCT and 35 from each of the 36 states of the federation will benefit from the largesse from the National Lottery Trust Fund.
