Mixed feelings have continued to greet the ongoing election in the state. While the event went smoothly in some parts of Ikeja and Yaba areas of the state, reverse was the case in Ikoyi and Lekki area of the state.

For example, at Ward 045, Sunday Adigun, where former governor of Lagos State, Senator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu voted, the exercise commenced early enough and by 4: pm election had been concluded.

But in Unit 034 in Bourdilon Ikoyi, where Tinubu’s wife, Senator Oluremi voted, INEC officials did not show up until 11.45am and accreditation did not begin until 11.55am. The senator had arrived the polling unit about four hours earlier, at 8am.

The situation was worse in Unit 033, Recreation Park, Victoria Garden City (VGC), where the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Yemi Osinbajo was registered to vote, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officials arrived several hours behind schedule, they came ill- prepared.

While one of the card readers was not functional, the two lists that the INEC officials came with for the two polling units 033 and 033A, situated in the same place was faulty, the other with names in alphabetical order from A to D leaving behind the list containing list of names from E-Z.

Osinbajo could not be accredited until 2.05pm despite arriving the polling unit at about 8:40am and at 4:pm accreditation process was still ongoing. Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Ayo Gbeleyi, who explained the challenges facing the unit however said they are determined to make the process succeed.

According to him, despite a “few hiccups here and there, people started trooping out here from around 7:30-8am and we got here at about 8:40am, but INEC officials were not here by then, but as a very organised community you can see volunteers already taking down names so that we can have orderly accreditation and voting process.

“INEC team eventually showed up around 10.0’clock and started the accreditation process in earnest. As you may have noticed, there are two accreditation points, but one of them has a complete register of voters, but the second unit did not have a complete register of voters, what they got were names in alphabetical order starting from A-D, we are still expecting register from E-Z, some of our names were not there.

“Another problem we are having is that, one of the card readers is not working, though the second one is working, they have assured us that they have contacted their zonal office and their supervisors are coming around with another one, but we are all Nigerians, we are committed to this exercise, we are patriots, so we will be here,” he said.
