Federation Cup defending champions, Akwa United tie with Sunshine headlined the 2016 Round of 16 fixtures released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with Rivers United face off with 3SC and Wikki Tourists’ blockbuster tie with Plateau United the remaining two fixtures which pitted premier league clubs against themselves in the race to qualify for the quarter final stage of the competition.
The Promise Keepers breezed past Lobi Stars 2-1 in the 2015 final to end their long wait for domestic title but the Uyo side must negotiate their way past a tough Owena Waves side if they are to progress in the competition in the undoubted match of the round while Rivers United and Wikki Tourists will hope to continue with their recent impressive results when they tackle 3SC and Plateau United respectively.
In the remaining fixtures announced, Nasarawa United will face Dynamite FC who halted the run of Flash Flamingoes 3-2 in the round of 32 while Prime FC, the conquerors of Kano Pillars have another tough assignment at hand when they slug it out with Warri Wolves who walked over their opponent, Jigawa Golden Stars when they failed to show up.
Speaking to Goal on the draw, the head coach of Nasarawa United, Kabiru Dogo stated that the Solid Miners would be ready for the National League side and that they won’t underrate Dynamite FC after their scrappy 1-0 win over Go Round FC of Port Harcourt in the round of 32.
He said with some top clubs like Kano Pillars, MFM and Tornadoes shown the exit doors by lower division teams, they must buckle up if they do not want to be eliminated by Dynamite FC.
“We have seen the draw and our opponent have emerged. We will try to prepare very well for Dynamite because we do not want to be shocked like other teams that have been shocked out,” Dogo told Goal.
