2020 Summer Olympics: Tokyo wins bid to host 2020 Summer Olympics

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, on Saturday won the bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, beating Madrid (Spain) and Istanbul (Turkey).

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge announced the winning bid at the ongoing 125th session of the IOC in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is the second time that Tokyo will host the Games, following the 1964 edition which was also held in the Japanese capital.

Saturday’s announcement, was the culmination of a two-year process, which the IOC has developed over a number of years to ensure that the city that is elected is capable of hosting successful Games in the year in question and that the process is fair and transparent for all involved.

The announcement is the last most important assignment for Mr. Rogge, who will retire at the end of the current IOC session, after 12 years at the helm of the Olympic Movemen.

London hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics while Rio De Janeiro in Brazil will host the 2016 edition of the four-yearly Games.
