250 Golfers set to compete in Nigeria @ 64 Independence Championship

The IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, has unveiled its event lineup for the Nigeria @ 64 Independence Golf Championship, marking the nation’s 64th anniversary.

Addressing journalists at the clubhouse, Dr. James Agbonhese, Chairman of the Committee and Vice-Captain of the Club, announced the week-long competition will kick off on Wednesday with the Staff and Caddies contest. On Thursday, the Lady section will host a special celebration for past Captains and Lady Captains. Friday’s events will feature Category Three tournaments, including Ladies with a handicap of 28 and above, Men with a handicap of 19 and above, Veterans, and Super Veterans.

Saturday will see Category Two tournaments for Ladies with handicaps between 11 and 27, and Men with handicaps between 11 and 18. A Double Matchplay between IBB players and golfers from Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, and Rwanda is slated for Sunday, with a Single Matchplay to follow on Monday.

The grand finale will take place on October 1st, with a ceremonial tee-off in the morning attended by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, and other dignitaries. A celebratory evening with food, drinks, and music will follow.

“We have no other country but Nigeria,” Agbonhese emphasized. “Despite the challenges, Nigeria will be great again, and we are proud to celebrate our unity in diversity through this tournament.”

Club Captain Ibrahim Babayo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Club’s role in showcasing Nigeria to the world. He assured that the course is ready for all categories, despite the rainy weather.

Lady Captain Dame Julie Okah Donli added that the Thursday tournament, honoring past Captains and Lady Captains, will feature Afro-Juju maestro Shina Peters to entertain attendees.

Various trophies and gifts have been secured for winners across all categories.

The briefing was attended by all members of the organizing committee.
