361 DRC refugees return home from Congo

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has repatriated 361 nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from Congo’s northern Likouala district, Congolese radio announced Thursday.

It said Wednesday’s repatriation was part of the tripartite programme involving the two Congo and UNHCR, and brings to 100,000 the number of voluntary returnees to the DRC.

‘More than 20,000 others have also expressed their desire to return to the DRC this year,’ said UNHCR spokesman Celine Schmitt, adding that more than 20,000 refugees were still living in the Likouala district.

Between 2009 and 2010, over 131,000 people fled to Congo following inter-ethnic clashes in the DRC.
