While commissioning the roads which are complete with walkways for pedestrians, Oshiomhole commended the role the Nigeria Air Force plays in the maintenance of security in the country.
Oshiomhole who was in company of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adeshola Amosu and other top officers of the Air Force said, “I know that this is a very busy period for the Nigeria Armed Forces and as the Chief of the entire Air Staff, I need not be educated on your own specific challenges with regard to providing Air cover to our men and women under arms who are confronting insurgency in the various parts of the country”.
He said, “Many of us, a few years back, would have sworn that Nigerians love life so much that even the poorest among us would not want to go and wire himself or herself to pay a price of no just cause. Even when there was a just cause, we were not sure that Nigerians would be willing to make such sacrifices.
“But this has become part of our recent history and like everything that has a beginning, I believe with concerted efforts, this insurgency will be brought to an end.”
He maintained, “For too long, Nigerians myself inclusive, probably never appreciated the role of the Armed Forces and we took the role of the Armed Forces in securing the territorial integrity of the country and even internal security for granted. We in Edo State appreciate the sacrifices being made by Officers and Men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and I know a few who have paid the supreme price just to ensure that we are safe”.
He urged the Officers and Men of the Armed Forces particularly the Nigerian Air Force to continue to dedicate themselves to securing the territorial integrity of the country and of course as a strong pillar for democracy.
He extolled the cordial relationship between the Nigeria Air Force and the people of Edo State and sued for its sustenance.
Oshiomhole assured that the State Government will cooperate with the NAF in the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy for the proposed Air Force Secondary School at the Air Force Barracks, in Benin City.
Earlier, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Amosu accompanied by other top officers had paid a visit to the Governor at Government where he said: “Benin is a passionate place for me because I spent twelve years of my active service in Benin City. So the formative years of my service in the Nigeria Air Force took place here and so here, is home to me”.
Amosu commended the infrastructural development in the state stressing that during his stay in Benin, he never envisaged that Benin City could be transformed to its present level of development.
He described Edo State as peaceful and solicited the cooperation of Edo State Government in the enlistment of qualified Edo Men and Women into the Nigerian Air Force to increase the state quota.
