Akwa Ibom Gets First Female Deputy Speaker

The Akwa state House of Assembly has elected the first female deputy Speaker.

The new deputy Speaker, Felicia Bassey, representing Okobo state constituency in Akwa Ibom state election followed the nullification of the election of the former occupier, Effiong Bassey, representing Oron/Udung state constituency by the Appeal Court.

The new speaker was sworn in by the Speaker, Onofiok Luke, after she accepted her nomination and got the unanimous election for the position by her colleagues.

Bassey was the immediate past chairman of Okobo local government area of the state. She was nominated by Friday Iwok, a member representing Abak state constituency and was seconded by Nse Essien of Onna state constituency.

The Speaker, Luke charged his deputy to live up to her colleagues’ confidence in her ability to perform well in her new duties to the Assembly effectively.

Meanwhile,the recent appointment of the former aide to Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, Ibim Semenitari, by President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission had been condemned by the Elders of Eket federal constituency in Akwa Ibom state.
