Aluko Scores Spectacular Goal As Hull City Edge Magpies

sone-alukoNigerian international Sone Aluko netted a sublime match-winning volley as promoted Hull City twice came from behind to win 3-2 at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The home side, who were looking for a third consecutive victory, twice took the lead through striker Loic Remy, who was making his first start at St James’ Park since signing on loan from Queens Park Rangers.

However, Robbie Brady cancelled out the Frenchman’s first goal and then teed up Ahmed Elmohamady for a second equaliser before Aluko applied the coup de grace with 14 minutes to play.

Victory lifted Steve Bruce’s side level on points with Newcastle in mid-table, but they lead the club from the northeast on goal difference.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew made no changes to the team that won 2-1 at Aston Villa last weekend, meaning Yohan Cabaye made his first home start since refusing to play for the club in a bid to force through a move to Arsenal.

Bruce, meanwhile, brought Liam Rosenior and Stephen Quinn into his team in place of injured captain Robert Koren and defender Maynor Figueroa, who has been granted compassionate leave.

Writing in his programme notes, Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear defended the club’s lack of activity during the transfer window, saying their failure to sign more players was “not for the lack of effort”.

However, it was a Kinnear loan signing who made the breakthrough in the 10th minute, as Remy headed Papiss Cisse’s mishit volley past Allan McGregor to claim his first Newcastle goal.

The lead was to last only 16 minutes, with Brady gathering a pass from Aluko before drilling a low shot between the legs of Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Remy restored the hosts’ advantage a minute before halftime, reacting smartly when Cabaye had a shot blocked by James Chester to curl home his second goal.

But Hull refused to lie down and equalised for the second time in the game early in the second period when Elmohamady converted Brady’s free-kick with a glancing header.

Worse was to follow for the home side with just under 15 minutes remaining, as Nigeria international Aluko met George Boyd’s left-wing centre with an 18-yard volley that clanged against the right-hand post before falling into the net.
