Angola fully backs acceptable political solution mutually to Sahara issue ‘on compromise’

Angola has just taken a step forward in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, pleading on Tuesday for a political solution based on compromise for the Sahara issue, which even represents the solution proposed by Morocco before the UN as part of the autonomy proposal.

Following a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and his counterpart, Téte Antonio, within the framework of the 3rd joint Morocco-Angola commission, the two countries welcomed the positive development of their relations.

In a joint statement issued, on Tuesday in Rabat, at the end of the 3rd session of the Moroccan-Angolan Joint Cooperation Commission, Angola, which was for a long time a bastion of the separatist thesis, and supporting the Polisario militia, expressed its support for a policy based on compromise.

This is close to the Moroccan position and eliminates the thesis of the separatists promoted by Algeria which consists of a referendum impossible to apply according to the admission of the United Nations.

In their joint statement, Morocco and Angola, “welcome the positive development of their relations and underline the interest of the two countries in establishing an ambitious and fruitful cooperation in several areas”.

Relations between the two countries have improved markedly in recent years thanks to the cordial relations between King Mohammed VI and President João Lourenço, re-elected in 2022 for a second term.

The two heads of state have met personally twice, the last of which dates back to a year before the Covid-19 pandemic, in Brazzaville, Congo.

As such, “Angola salutes the leadership of King Mohammed VI on the issue of migration at the African and international levels and praises Morocco’s vision of an emerging, stable and prosperous Africa”, adds the joint statement.
