APC Criticizes Fubara’s Budget Presentation to Four Lawmakers

The Rivers State APC hasfaulted Governor Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 N800bn budget to only four lawmakers at Government House.

In a statement, State Caretaker Chairman Tony Okocha said taking the bill to suspended members falls short of constitutional requirements.

The party leader argued Section120(2) stipulates monies cannot be expended without appropriation by the Assembly.

Citing Section 92(2)C, Okocha stated a two-thirds majority vote is needed to remove the Speaker after loyalist lawmakers passed confidence in Amaewhule.

He cautioned spending based on such a presentation provides valid grounds for impeachment proceedings.

The constitutionality of major financial decisions taken outside established legislative procedures was brought to question.

As the crisis deepens, adherence to due process and preservation of democratic tenets amid power tussles remains key to sustainable governance.

With both sides digging in, meaningful arbitration will be important to defuse tensions and uphold the rule of law.
