As the lobby to clinch the Senate presidency intensifies, chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the North Central geopolitical zone have underscored the essence of having the position zoned to the region.

APC stalwarts comprising party chairmen from the zone argued that it should produce the next Senate President, considering its huge contribution to the election triumph of the party at the just-concluded general elections.

The party is yet to take a decision on the zoning of its national offices. But the stance of the APC North Central is contained in a communiqué issued yesterday at the end of its strategic meeting on how to outwit other zones clamouring for the position.

The communiqué jointly signed by APC North central zonal chairman, Mr. Zakari Ede; APC chairman in Kwara State, Hon. Ishola Fulani; Nasarawa APC chairman, Mr. Philips Tatari and Plateau State APC chairman, Mr. Latep Daban, stated thus: “Our resolution is borne out of the fact that by every consideration, the North Central zone deserves to produce the next Senate president.”

Other signatories to the communiqué include Benue State APC chairman, Mr. Abba Yaro; his counterpart in Kogi State, Alhaji Hardy Ametuo; Federal Capital Territory APC chairman and Abdulmalik Usman as well as Mr. M.J. Imam, chairman, Niger State APC.

The chieftains reminded the national secretariat of the party that in view of the unpredictable voting pattern of the North Central, it would be wise to zone the position of the Senate President to the region.

“We need to emphasise that the North Central is a vulnerable zone and our success and victory should not be taken for granted,” the party chieftains warned, adding that in the interest of fairness “it would be equitable and just for the North Central to retain the office of the Senate president. We hereby demand same,” the communiqué stated.

They argued that but for the unwavering support of the North Central, the victory of the party, particularly at the presidential poll, would almost have been impossible, even as they insisted that giving the zone the slot would amount to a deserved compensation in appreciation of its role in the last general elections.

“It must be noted that since 1999, the North Central zone, even under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been occupying the third position, and with our recent performance, we equally believe that the zone should have that same third position.

“We also like to put on record that the North Central states delivered five governors as we won all our governorship
elections; delivered 13 senators and other National Assembly members, including members of state Houses of Assembly to the APC as against the norm.”

Against this background, party leaders in the zone said it would be unfair and unjust to be treated otherwise after the enumerated achievements.

“If the North Central zone has performed and delivered under the APC, we believe we should be adequately rewarded as was done under the PDP,” the communiqué further stated.

Meanwhile, the North Central APC leaders used the occasion to congratulate the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) and Vice President-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) for emerging victorious at the presidential poll.
