Ballot snatchers killed in Kogi during Presidential election

Presidential and National Assembly elections held penultimate week have gone with some casualties following attempts to rig the election in some parts of Kogi state.

Community and security sources revealed that two persons were killed while running away with ballot boxes at Ogene Enugu and Iyale villages in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi state.

According to reports, a young man popularly called Alhaji was said to have been hired by one of the candidates for the House of Representatives for Dekina/Bassa to snatch ballot boxes at polling units.

It was gathered that the ballot box snatcher stormed the polling unit and forcefully took the box and was about escaping when he was said to have fallen down and died instantly with the ballot box firmly stuck to his chest.

Another version has it that after lifting the box, he started running and was pursued by voters who were said to have mobbed him to death. He has since been buried at Lokoja, the state capital.

In a similar episode at Iyale village in Dekina LGA,one Hassan was alleged to have been shot dead while escaping with a ballot box. He was said to have been contracted by the said candidate for the National Assembly for the Dekina/Bassa Federal constituency.

When contacted, an official of the victorious party,who wants to remain anonymous said that the incidents should serve as deterrent to others. He said that Nigerians were now conscious and ready to defend their votes.
