CAF Tourney: TP Mazembe secure group stage first win
TP Mazembe earned their first win at the mini-league stage of the Orange CAF Confederation Cup with a 3-0 win over Moroccan visitors, FUS Rabat on Saturday in Kamalondo.
All three goals for the DR Congo champions came from their foreign legion – Solomon Asante (Ghana), Mbwana Samatta (Tanzania) and Cheibane Traore (Mali).
The win pushes Les Corbeaux to the summit of Group B with four points, three points richer than CA Bizertin (Tunisia) and Entente Setif (Algeria), who clash on Sunday in the Tunisian city of Bizerte.
Mazembe coach Patrice Cateron deployed an attacking line-up featuring captain Tresor Mputu Mabi, Rainford Kalaba, Asante, Samatta and Traore, making clear his intent for the maximum points.
On six minutes, the hosts went up through Asante before Mputu set Samatta up for the second goal four minutes later.
On 55 minutes, Asante drilled his way through the middle before fetching Traore, who fired in for the third goal.
The Moroccans fought back but failed in their efforts for a consolation. FUS Rabat, winners of the second-tier continental club championship in 2010 have just a point from two games so far at the mini-league stage.
