Canada 2014 Qualifier: Dedevbo berates wasteful Falconets
Super Falconets gaffer, Peter Dedevbo, at the weekend ripped at the national Under-20 team for squandering tonnes of chances against Tunisia in Abuja.
The Nigerians endured a frustrating afternoon before they put Tunisia to the sword with an emphatic 4-0 win in the first leg of the African qualifier to brighten their chances of reaching Canada next year.
The spectators were treated to a tepid first half as the goals did not come until midway into the encounter with Uchechi Sunday scoring a hat- trick.
Dedevbo, who obviously spoke the minds of the public, expressed disappointment in his team with their first half attitude and wastefulness.
He noted the team lacked cohesion and was frustrated by their inability to rip apart the Tunisians who packed their defence in the first 45 minutes.
“I am very disappointed in my players, even with the 4-0 victory. This is a team that is a unit and can play together, but today they put every foot wrong and their movement on the ball was slow. They also failed to take two of the chances they created in the first half. We would have scored more goals if we converted the early opportunities,” Dedevbo said.
The return leg will be played in Tunis this week end with Nigeria in a comfortable position to progress against the Tunisians who eliminated Morocco 8-1 aggregate in the last stage.
Dedevbo said he had no fear about the return match, saying he was confident the Falconets would advance at the expense of Tunisia.
“I have no fear in Tunis as we can defend the four goals in the reverse fixture. Now that we have played them we know what to expect. We are capable of beating them in their home. If we don’t score, definitely they can not score against us”, he boasted.
