CBN Reassures Public on Acceptance of Naira Notes
The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a statement to banks and citizens regarding continued recognition of older and freshly redesigned Naira notes.
CBN’s acting communications director emphasised in a press release that all denominations, including previous and current designs, remain legal tender. This follows the Supreme Court granting government prayers to lift the December deadline on acceptance of ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000 banknotes.
In light of the ruling, the apex bank directed branches to carry on both issuing and receiving all Naira denominations. A spokesperson was quoted confirming “the old versions of N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes, alongside the redesigned versions, shall continue to be legal tender.”
With its statutory powers, CBN pledged banknotes distributed by the institution will permanently maintain legal status. Nigerians were urged to accept Naira across transactions and handle notes carefully to preserve their usage lifespan.
The reassurance aims to boost public trust in both legacy and updated banknotes remaining valid forms of payment nationwide.
