Court remands four for attacking ex-Kogi speaker

A Lokoja Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of four persons – two men and two students – in the custody of the Federal Prisons, Okene, for attacking a former Speaker of the Kogi House of Assembly.

The two students, Shaibu Abdulrahman and Shaibu Abdulazeez and Isah Tijani (22), a labourer and Isah Oseni (25), businessman, all of Okene, were reported to have committed the offence on March 25 in Okene.

They were charged with alleged criminal intimidation, assault, theft and political thuggery by the Divisional Police Headquarters, Okene.

According to the Police First Information Report (FIR) read before the court by the Prosecuting Police Officer, C.S. Ayabatu, the accused attacked Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, the former Speaker of Kogi House of Assembly, an APC leader, and his entourage while on campaign tour to Okene on that day.

The report said that Bello reported to the Police at Okene that while he and his entourage were on a visit to the All Progressives Party (APC) chairman in the area, one Malam Oneta at his residence in Enyinare area of Okene, the suspects and others now at large, attacked him.

He said that the accused, armed with dangerous weapons including guns, cutlasses and axes, invaded Oneta’s premises and inflicted matchet cuts on him and his entourage and damaged three cars, value yet unknown.
