A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt on Thursday nullified the May 23 local government polls.

Justice Lambo Akambo, who gave the verdict, described the conduct of the election by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSISEC) as a flagrant disobedience of court’s order.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state had gone to court seeking an injunction to restrain INEC from releasing voters’ register for the election.

The judge said the state government and RSISEC had earlier been ordered not to go ahead with the election, but that the electoral body violated the court’s order.

Akambo said the election was not only illegal, but an affront as the case was already before the court before the poll was conducted.

The court ordered that the purported election that brought the chairmen and councillors be set aside. The election was conducted five days to the end of Gov. Rotimi Amaechi’s eight-year tenure.
