Delta Chief Vows to Revive Defunct Uvwie United
The Chief Sponsor of the first edition of Chief Omimi Peace and Unity Gold Cup 2013 Soccer Championship, Chief Godstime Emashegbemi Omimi has said that he will use the tournament to bring back the defunct Uvwie United Football Club as the competition kicks-off today (December 1, 2013) at the Ekpan Police Station play ground, Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.
Speaking at a pre-tournament briefing held at GT MAINS Hotel, Chief Omimi as he is fondly called, said that the idea behind the championship was to build better relationship amongst the youths of UVWIE kingdom and leaders of the area.
He charged youths from the area to put in the best as those who did well would be selected for the proposed Uvwie United Football Club.
He disclosed that the competition meant for all the quarters that constitute Uvwie Kingdom will be structured in a way that Uvwie indigenes dominate the teams, adding that to promote inter ethnic relations, youths from other ethnic nationalities would be given the opportunity to join the teams provided such individuals have flare of the game.
The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTDF) Chairman, Ekpan, said that he was donating a trophy for the competition with a total sum of #3.5 million, adding that he has decided to make it an annual event.
He noted that another reason for organizing the competition is for leaders in the communities to come out during the Christmas period to engage the youths and bring them out of the streets from committing various forms of crime.
He said that the winner f the competition will take home the giant trophy, #300,000.00 and a live cow, first runners up will be honoured with a cash prize of #200,000.00 and a live ram, 3rd prize #150,000 and a live goat, while 4th prize will go home with #100,000 and rice. He said ” I am a sports lover in this local government and I will not like sports to die In this Local Government. This is because sports will bring unity amongst the communities. I was a nobody ten years ago and today God has smiled at me. I want to impart something good to the youths and the communities. This tournament is not my own but for all of us. So let us keep it afloat”
He also thanked Hon. Akemu for supporting the tourney with #200,000 cash prize for two categories of award.
The Local Organizing Committee Chairman, Mr. Akama Best said that the sponsor Chief Godstime Omatsemigbe Omimi is a man with passion for the game of football having played in some of the youth clubs in the state during his youthful days.
“Presently because of his crave for the Unity of Uvwie Kingdom, he has decided to sponsor this
tournament”.
He added that the aim of the soccer championship to be competed for by all the communities in Uvwie local government is to foster Unity amongst them and to curb crime from the communities.
Mr. Akama also paid tribute to a member of the main organizing committee Hon. Alex Amudo the former Vice Chairman of Warrri Wolves fc. Whom he described as a great footballer in his days as well as administrator noting that with men of this kind, football in the local government will be great.
