Ecuador suspends recognition of so-called ‘rasd’

The Republic of Ecuador announced on Tuesday its decision to suspend recognition of the so-called “rasd,” a status initially granted in 1983 and solidified with the establishment of a representative office in 2009.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, communicated this decision to her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a phone call.

She also confirmed that a formal notification letter has been dispatched to the separatist representation in Quito.

This move reflects the ongoing efforts led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to affirm Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and promote the Autonomy Plan as the exclusive framework for resolving this regional dispute.

Ecuador’s suspension of recognition marks a significant shift in relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and this Latin American nation, paving the way for enhanced diplomatic ties.
