Enugu Gears Up for Bet9ja Southeast Badminton Championship
The excitement is palpable in Enugu as the annual Bet9ja Southeast Badminton Championship kicks off, bringing together the five eastern states of Nigeria. Powered by the Bet9ja Foundation, this year’s tournament runs from Monday to Wednesday at the indoor sports hall of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
This marks the third consecutive year since 2022 that the championship is being held under the Bet9ja banner. Adaobi Cuomo, Vice Chairman of the Bet9ja Foundation, expressed the organization’s commitment to fostering sports development as part of its core initiatives. “We are dedicated to improving the lives of Nigerians through various programs that address the unique needs of diverse communities,” she stated.
The championship features competitions among senior men, women, and veterans, showcasing the region’s top badminton talent. Yetunde Osunnuga, Bet9ja Agents Liaison Officer, highlighted the foundation’s extensive impact, noting that it currently supports 160 projects across 31 states, benefiting 150 communities with an investment exceeding N587 million.
Last year’s edition produced remarkable results, with Jeremiah Chigozie emerging as a standout athlete. Despite being physically challenged, Chigozie excelled at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, becoming the first Nigerian male player to reach the global event. He made headlines by defeating Germany’s Marcel Adam in straight sets.
This year, Chigozie returns alongside notable competitors such as Anambra State’s Jovita Anakwe and Queen Chibuzor from Abia State, both previous singles champions, adding to the excitement of this annual festival of rackets and shuttles. As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on these exceptional athletes as they strive for victory.
