Paul Aigbogun’s men will be hoping for a favourable group when the continental football governing body holds the competition’s draw on Tuesday
Confederation of African Football will hold the group phase draw for the 2016 edition of the Caf Champions League in Cairo on May 24, 2016.
The draw will take place on Tuesday, 24 May 2016 at the CAF Secretariat in Cairo, Egypt 12:30pm Nigerian time but 14H30 local time.
The draw will see representatives from 16 teams – both in the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup which have qualified for the stages inside the Caf headquarter to know their opponents in the group stage.
Nigeria’s lone campaigners Enyimba will feature in the draw alongside seven other surviving teams – Al Ahly, Zamalek (both Egypt), AS Vita (DR Congo), ASEC Mimosas (Cote d’Ivoire), ES Setif (Algeria), Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and Zesco (Zambia).
In the second tier competition, holders Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), Ahly Tripoli (Libya), MO Bejaia (Algeria), Medeama (Ghana), FUS Rabat, Kawkab (both Morocco), TP Mazembe (DR Congo) and Young Africans (Tanzania) make up the eight teams.
Clubs cannot be drawn against teams from their own country until the semi-finals or clubs they faced in the group stage, meaning there is no possibility of Zamalek facing Egypt , while ASEC Mimosas and AS Vita will be seen as the most generous possibilities to draw.
The eight teams are drawn into two groups of four. Each group is played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the semi-finals.
The People’s Elephants saw off Etoile du Sahel via penalties to book their place in the group stage of the Caf Champions League after a 3-3 aggregate score at the Stade Olympique de Sousse.
