EU reaffirms “immense value” of strategic partnership with Morocco, says Josep Borrell
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reaffirmed the “immense value” the European Union places on its strategic partnership with Morocco during a press conference in Luxembourg on Monday.
Borrell, also Vice-President of the European Commission, stated that the 27 EU member states are committed to deepening the longstanding, extensive, and profound partnership with Morocco, highlighting the EU’s desire to continue strengthening multi-faceted cooperation with Morocco, which he described as a relationship built on friendly ties.
“We have established friendly relations and multi-faceted cooperation with Morocco, and we wish to continue and strengthen it in the coming months,” Borrell assured.
The remarks followed the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, where EU foreign ministers acknowledged the recent rulings by the European Court of Justice concerning the EU-Morocco fisheries and agricultural agreements.
In this context, Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to preserving and strengthening its relations with Morocco, referring to a joint statement issued with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Borrell emphasized that the EU intends to work closely with Morocco across all sectors, in alignment with the principle of pacta sunt servanda (agreements must be kept), underscoring the importance of this strategic partnership for both parties.
