Fifa confirms dates for U17 and U20 Women’s World Cup

Fifa has confirmed the upcoming 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup will be staged in India from October 11 to October 30, 2022.

The dates were made known after a virtual FIFA Council meeting held on Thursday, May 20, also announced the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will be held from 10-28 August 2022 in Costa Rica

Before now, U17 Women’s World Cup was scheduled to be organised earlier in November 2020 before it was postponed to February and March in 2021 in India but later cancelled due to Covid-19.

Despite the cancellation, Fifa decided that India earlier named as the host for the botched 2020 event by the FIFA Council in March 2019, will still host the 2022 edition of the World Cup.

Besides the new dates, no changes to the venues picked before the cancellation, as the five venues in India earlier selected as host cities for the tournament remains the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata, Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, EKA Arena in Ahmedabad and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

The African qualifying race for India 2022 will get underway in January 2022, with three representatives expected to emerge at the end of four rounds from the continent.

For the U20 final tournament, the event was billed to take place initilly in August/September 2020 before moved to between 20 January – 6 February 2021 but later cancelled due to Covid-19.

Following the pulling out of Panama from co-hosting with Costa Rica, Fifa named the later the solo host by the FIFA Council in March 2019 for the 2022 edition of the World Cup.

With three representatives expected from Africa, the qualifying series for Costa Rica 2022 will get underway in August 2021, with four rounds to decide the finalists from the continent.
