Flood: Ajaokuta LG Strategies against forecasted Flood

Despite the prayers and consultation of oracles as is currently been done by the people of Ajaokuta Local Government Area in Kogi State towards averting the predicted 2013 flood,the Capt Idris Wada administration says it is pro actively putting in place measures to mitigate the expected flood even it becomes worst.

Kogi State Deputy Governor,Yomi Awoniyi,and Chairman flood Management Committee,stated this while on a sensitization/awareness campaign in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the State.

The on going sensitization which also aimed at appealing to those living on flood prone areas to move to higher ground is to also inspect suitable areas proposed for camp sites for those that would be internally displaced if the flood comes.

Awoniyi said even though there is a rising of the waters which may not be too alarming,the state government says it is preparing for the worst.

The State Government says it is against the setting up of fake camps as was experienced last year to siphon relief materials,government he noted will be scientific in its approach to documentation of displaced persons.

The urgency in identifying camp sites that would accommodate those that may be displaced ,Awoniyi explained became necessary to avert a situation where the state had close to 200 camps last year that was difficult to manage.

Special camp arrangement Awoniyi explained would be made for those living around Ganaja and Gadumo area in view of their proximity to Lokoja.

Earlier in his remarks, Aloysius Okino,Council Chairman Ajaokuta Local Government,said following the devastation caused the area by last year flood,his council in partnership with the Traditional Institution is praying and consulting the oracles to avert another flood.

He however said the Council in collaboration with the state is prepared to make life comfortable for those that would be displaced if the floods come.

In his speech,the Ohi of Ajaokuta and Chairman Traditional Council, Musa Isah Achuja,commended the proactive ness of the present administration towards the predicted flood.

Highlight of the visit was the inspection of Racafo camp sites among others by the committee.
