Flood: Kogi is better Prepared than 2012 – Wada

The Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada, has disclosed that the State is now better prepared to handle this year’s predicted flood if it occur.

Capt. Idris Wada made the disclosure while answering questions from Media Executives in the State as part of activities marking the twenty second anniversary of the State creation, said several preparation measures have been part in place by his administration to mitigate the impact of the expected flood.

The Governor also dispelled the insinuation making the rounds that the State received over N2billion. Capt. Wada emphatically said what the State received as donation was about N800million adding that the donations were judiciously used for the purposes intended.

Already the 272 Post Housing Flood Estate under-construction by the State Government, Capt. Wada disclosed is nearing completion, said the houses would serve as emergency shelter for flood affected persons, pending when they would be allocated permanently, to people living along flood prone areas in Lokoja.

Wada added that houses around the river belt area of the state would be pulled down in due course, told the people living in flood prone areas not to wait for the water to come before they relocate.

The Governor who also dispelled another rumor making the rounds that paltry sum of money was given to victims of the flood by the State Government, said the nine affected Local Government Areas were given N139million by the State Government, noted that it was the decision of communities and their stakeholders who decided on the disbursement method used in sharing the money.

The Governor explained that the State remained the only state that has publicly published documented amount of money received as flood donations, added also that the State remained the only State that looked after those affected by the flood, six months after the flood had since receded.

The Governor once again appealed to those who were affected by last year’s flood to take solace in God and appreciate the efforts shown by government in mitigating the flood impact.
