Nigeria national U20 lost 1-0 to Benin Republic in an international friendly game played in Cotonou on Sunday evening.
An early second half strike from captain Seibou Mama was all the Young Squirrels needed to get a hard fought win over the Flying Eagles.
Manu Garba’s side began the encounter on a bright note with Alhassan Ibrahim threatening the hosts defence as early as the second minute but his efforts was way off the mark. However, the first half ended scoreless after both sides failed to find the back of the net.
On resumption of the second half, the hosts went a goal ahead through Mama’s who fired home past goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo in the 48th minute from distance.
Even with the introduction of Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali in the closing stages, the Flying Eagles were denied goalscoring chances by the Junior Squirrel’s goalkeeper.
The international friendly was organised to prepare the Flying Eagles for their African Youth Championship qualifiers against Tanzania.
Benin Republic on their own part will be squaring up with Congo in the next stage of the qualifiers.
