Freed at last! Edo Kidnapped lawyer secures freedom

A top Nigerian lawyer who was kidnapped in the country’s southern Edo state about three weeks ago has been freed unharmed, according to local media reports Thursday.

Mr. Mike Ozekhome, who was kidnapped by gunmen who waylaid his vehicle as he travelled in the southern state of Edo 24 Aug., was released early Thursday.

It was not known whether any ransom was paid to secure his release.

The Lagos-based television station TVC broadcast live pictures from Ozekhome’s Lagos residence showing jubilant family members and well wishers celebrating the lawyer’s release.

Kidnapping for ransom has assumed a serious dimension in Nigeria, especially in the southern part of the country, with the kidnappers targetting whoever they think will fetch them a huge ransom.

Most of those kidnapped are usually freed unharmed by their abductors, mostly upon the payment of an agreed ransom, while occasionally the security agencies rescue such abducted persons.
