Glo/CAFAwards: Victor Ikpeba sings Mikel, snubs Drogba
The winner of CAF Footballer of the Year 1997, Victor Ikpeba, has predicted a keen fight between close fight between midfield powerhouses, Chelsea and Nigeria international John Obi Mikel and Yaya Toure of Man City and Ivorian international.
Speaking at venue of the tonight’s Glo CAF Awards, Eko Hotels in Lagos, former Super Eagles attacker revealed this on the 3-man CAF shortlist for the coveted African award which is billed to hold on Thursday in Lagos, Nigeria.
He refused to accept the possibility of Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend, Didier Drogba who now plays in Turkey with Galatasaray emerging as best player on the continent.
The Prince of Monaco as he was fondly referred to during his active career with As Monaco of France, believes “it will be a straight and close fight between midfield powerhouses, John Obi Mikel of Chelsea/Nigeria and Yaya Toure of Man City/ Ivory Coast.
“This time around, I think it is going to be between Mikel and Toure, but if you look at what Mikel has done since last season winning the Europa and AFCON, then I think he has a realistic chance of winning the award ahead of Toure,” he adjudged.
