Kabba: Senate President aide pleads Gbenga Arokoyo’s recall to Super Eagles

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, Kola Ologbondiyan has urged the Nigeria Football Federation and coach Stephen Keshi to recall Turkish club central defender Gbenga Arokoyo to the Super Eagles.

Ologbondiyan said the former Nigerian youth international is in an exciting form and ripe for the national team and as well advocated more sports competitions to boost peace and unity.

“I’m proud of Arokoyo (Gbenga) being a Kabba (Okun-Kogi) person. Just the way Onasi excites every Idooma person (Benue), that how Arokoyo excites us,” Ologbondiyan said in Kabba yesterday after watching a friendly at Saint Augustine College.

“I think he is doing wonderfully well for his club and deserves a shirt in the national team. I will appeal for the NFF and Keshi to give him (Arokoyo) a chance.

“We are going to mobilise support for him from the home front and appeal to every necessary quarters so that he can be part of the national team.

“Sports creates unity. The essence of this is to unite the youths. In Otupku recently, Senator David Mark engaged the youths year-in, year-out in a Basketball fiesta called “Mark the Ball”.

“For us this annual football tournament unite our youths and turned their heart from evil and that’s why we will encourage it,” he said.

Also speaking, the guest-speaker of the football event, Honourable Segun Modeyin urged the youths engage in sports in view of its huge financial potentials and economic impacts on the community.

“Sports is a veritable tool by which peace, unity and development can be achieved in any community. Many Nigerians stars have turned multi-billionaires through sports and made gains from adverts,” said Modeyin, a former acting chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local government area council.

“I will urge our youths to engage themselves in sports in order to earn a better living and will appreciate the provision of sports facility in the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, team of retired footballers in Disapora at the weekend defeated their counterparts from home 1-0 in an annual mini-football novelty match in Kabba.

The foreign team snatched victory through a penalty kick with just five minutes into the game played at Saint Augustine College stadium yesterday.

In the same view, the chairman of the occasion and governorship aspirant, Engineer George Olomoroti donated a trophy and promised to sponsor an annual football tournament beginning from 2015.

“This football event is a good initiative which had brought us together and also kept us united. I have plans for sports activities and hope to sponsor a football tournament starting from next year (2015),” he said.
