Kogi House of Assembly has called on the State Government to check the gully erosion threatening to wash off Giri Bridge serving 14 communities in Yagba-East Local Government of the state.

The call was contained in a resolution of the House issued at plenary on Wednesday following the adoption of a motion on Matter of Urgent Public Importance moved by Musa Omiata (PDP-Yagba-East).

Omiata said a fall of the Giri Bridge would certainly mark the end of the most important road linking a network of roads in the 14 communities and would have adverse consequences on the economic and social life of the people.

The communities according to him, are Takete, Isao, Imela, Ogbom, Ejuku, Jege, Aginmi, Ponyan, Ife-Olukotun, Oranre, Aliu, Igbagun, Ohun, Odo-Amu and Igbo-Ero.

He said that communities from Ekiti State through Irele on one axis and Omuo-Ekiti on the other axis would equally be cut off from the largest market in the area, the Mopo Isanlu Market just as council workers in the area would not be able to go to work.

The legislator noted that the road complemented the construction of Jege-Ponyan-Ife-Olukotun-Igbagun-Iyamoye road saying: “If the Giri Bridge is consumed by the erosion, all these efforts would be in vain and the communities would be badly affected.”

Omiata said the council in 2014 embarked on a skeletal repair work on the bridge but discovered that the magnitude of the work was beyond to its financial capability.

He therefore urged the state government to direct the Ministry of Works or the Kogi State Roads Maintenance Agency (KOGROMA) to ensure quick intervention and address the erosion menace and its threat to the bridge.

Seconding the motion, Adoke Bello (PDP-Adavi) underscored the need for the government to urgently come to the rescue of the people as the economy and social life of the 14 communities were at stake.

In his ruling, Alhaji Momoh-Jimoh Lawal, Speaker of the House commended the mover of the motion and adopted it following a majority voice votes in favour of the motion.
