Kogi Board Hails Wada on Bill Empowering Waste Management Board
The Acting Secretary of Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board, Mrs. Florence Joseph has commended the Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada, for signing into law the bill for the establishment, functions and powers of the Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board.
The bill to establish the Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board which was earlier passed by the State House of Assembly, was occasioned by the indiscriminate dumping of waste and haphazard physical development witnessed in the State on assumption of office, by the present administration.
With the Governor’s assent, Mrs. Florence says the Board is now empowered to achieve a sustainable and orderly development of the environment. The Board has also been given the right to prosecute sanitation offenders.
By the State Governor’s assent the Board’s objectives Mrs. Florence pointed out amongst others include; to secure the quality of the environment.
Similarly, the Board by its objectives Mrs. Florence maintained is to work towards minimizing the impact of physical development on the ecosystems of the State amongst others.
With the signing into law by the Governor the Board Mrs. Florence added is to ensure that owners or occupiers of premises clean and keep their premises and surroundings free from all undergrowths, weeds, filth, rubbish, litter, waste, refuse, obstruction of any description or any other nuisance.
The board’s other function according to her include; removing, destroying or demolishing all illegal houses, buildings or structures within the State.
The board she concluded is to also ensure that all owners of residential buildings and regulated premises provide sanitary toilet facilities in their premises.
