Kogi-born Nigerian athlete eyes gold in Irving Marathon in US on April 4

Nigerian marathon runner Aderonke Olumudi has set her sight on clinching gold in Saturday, April 4 GE Irving Half Marathon race after she won a silver and bronze medals in her two opening races in US.

The 20-year-old who is competing in her third marathon race is confident of beating her personal best to clinch the top prize in Dallas.

More than 2,500 runners are expected to participate in the 2015 GE Irving Marathon starting at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday with the race beginning from the Irving Convention Center through Las Colinas before arriving the Campión Trail with athletes expected to run on paved surfaces.

Earlier, Olumudi overcame weather challenges to nick the women’s silver at the 13th Bearathon half-marathon & 5K race in the town of Waco, USA on Saturday, March 21 after she had a week before made headlines In Texas clinching bronze In the Longview Marathon.

“I’ve really worked hard to be here – my dream is to win the gold medal on Saturday. I believe it is possible though may be tough, but God will help me,” Olumudi said.

The Kogi-born athlete who was initially reported to have put up some of her belongings for sale to raise funds to compete in the US marathon races, revealed her dreams to win a gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics while appreciating the East Texans finding her a place to stay.

“I’m grateful to God. Because I don’t know who would help me. I am so happy, and thanks to everyone who have help me this far. I want to be at the next Olympics and optimistic I can win gold,” she said.

Thereafter, Olumudi will move to Clemont, Florida to compete in her final race, Lake Minneola Half Marathon billed for April 25.
