About 2, 000 public primary schools in Kogi State have been received N5 m worth of sports equipment from the National Lottery Trust Funds.
The Executive Secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund, Habu Gumel, while handing over the equipment to the Kogi State Government in Lokoja, said the law establishing the agency empowered it to utilize proceeds from all national lottery operations for execution of projects across the country for the benefit and wellbeing of Nigerians.
Gumbel called on Nigerians to engage in any form of promotional lottery to keep to their obligations of remitting 20 per cent lottery proceeds to the Trust Fund.
He warned that government would no longer tolerate anything that could undermine the growth and development of lottery good causes in the country.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who was the Guest of Honour on the occasion, said the government had identified sport as a major revenue earner and capable of contributing significantly to the nation’ s gross earnings.
He pointed out that over the last three decades, many footballers had left the country for professional football in Europe and Asia.
“We will at the same time explore the possibility of concentrating on infrastructure and equipment that should endure in the longer term so as to expand the base of target beneficiaries, ” Lawal said.
