The Minister of Sports, Dr Tammy Danagogo, has congratulated the U-17 women team, the Flamingoes, for booking a quarter-final ticket at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women World Cup in Costa Rica.

A statement signed by Taye Akinyemi, the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, said Danagogo was elated with Nigeria’s win over Columbia.

“On behalf of our President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, the NSC and an appreciative nation, I congratulate our players, the technical crew and the NFA on this fantastic achievement,’’ the statement quoted Danagogo as saying.

The statement said that Danagogo specially congratulated Ihuoma Onyebuchi, who was voted the best player of the match.

“Our prayers and best wishes are with you. Be rest assured that “Goodluck’’ will continue to follow your dedication and enthusiasm,’’ he added.

Flamingoes came from behind to beat Columbia 2-1 to earn a quarter-final berth alongside Mexico and at the same time end the hopes of the South Americans.

Colombia burst out of the blocks with a third minute goal as Angie Rodriguez looped a header from a perfect Nancy Acosta cross over the head of stranded goalkeeper, Onyinyechukwu Okeke.

Nigeria drew level just past the midway point of the opening half with Joy Bokiri, curling in a perfectly taken free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Nigeria took the lead for the first time approaching the hour mark, as some sloppy marking from a corner allowed Uchenna Kanu to nod the ball in unchallenged at the back of the post.

The win leaves Nigeria sharing top spot with Mexico, while Colombia will now tackle China with each seeking their maiden points of the competition.

Nigeria’s next game is against Mexico on Sunday.
