Moroccan Sahara Dispute: Slovenia Praises Autonomy Plan as Path to Resolution
Slovenia has praised the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a promising framework for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, under the guidance of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.
This endorsement came in a joint statement following discussions held in Rabat on Tuesday between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon.
According to the joint communiqué, Slovenia reaffirmed its unwavering support for the UN-led process and commended Morocco’s sincere and credible efforts towards finding a practical, enduring, mutually acceptable, and compromise-driven political resolution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
Both ministers emphasized the crucial role of the United Nations in the political process and reiterated their backing for UN Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2703 adopted on October 30, 2023.
They also expressed solidarity with the endeavors of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to advance the political process based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions, as well as their backing for MINURSO.
Slovenia’s constructive stance, becoming the 16th European Union member state to endorse the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, aligns with an international trend that has seen over a hundred UN member countries lending their support to this initiative.
The visit of Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs to Morocco, at the invitation of Bourita, commemorates the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Slovenia.
