Moyes’ Man United lose in Ferdinand’s testimonial
David Moyes and Rio Ferdinand saw their party spoiled by Sevilla as Manchester United fell to a 3-1 defeat in the defender’s testimonial at Old Trafford.
Over 40,000 turned up at Old Trafford to pay tribute to Ferdinand, 34, and catch a glimpse of Moyes in his first home game in charge of United.
However Moyes, with one eye on Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Wigan, fielded a weakened side leaving out Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie. Moyes will be looking to win his first trophy with United at Wembley.
There was no place for Wayne Rooney, who is agitating for a move to Chelsea, with United saying the striker injured his shoulder in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Real Betis on Saturday.
However it is believed Rooney is fit to play a part at Wembley should Moyes opt to select him.
Vitolo opened the scoring when he ran in behind Chris Smalling to beat David De Gea to the ball and find the back of the net.
Then four minutes later Marko Marin, on loan from Chelsea, capped off a superb team move to double Sevilla’s lead.
Antonio Valencia pulled one back for United in the 64th minute when he slid home after good work down the left by Adnan Januzaj.
However Bryan Rabello struck in injury time to ensure victory for Sevilla.
