Nigeria Customs, ASPAC qualify for 2023 FIBA African Women League

Nigeria Customs Service and ASPAC of Benin Republic have qualified to play in the 2023 Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL) slated for 11th to 18th December.

The FIBA Zone 3 Basketball Qualifiers was played at the MO Basketball Arena in Abuja between 1st to 6th December, 2023 as the skills were displayed to the core during the period game.

With this victory, the Nigeria Customs Service team and ASPAC of Benin Republic will join others already qualified which include, CNSS Basketball Club Wildcard (DR Congo), and Equity Bank (Kenya).

Other qualified teams are Inter Clubs (Angola) 5 times Champions, KPA (Kenya), Overdose Up Station (Cameroun), REG (Rwanda Energy Group), Sporting of Alexandria (Egypt) Host University of Douala (Cameroun).

Customs topped the table with 6 points after winning two games, while the ASPAC of Benin Republic played two games, won one and lost one to secure 3 points, and the third participant, Olukoya Ladies, lost the two games with no points.

At the end of the game between the champion of Nigeria Premier League and NCS, the Borders ladies defeated the Olukoya ladies by 55 to 49 points to secure their second victory.

The first, Second, and third quarters went in favour of MFM with 19-13, 30-29, and 39-37 respectively but Borders Ladies came back smoking in the last quarters to turn the table with 55-49.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi has pledged to continue to support the Customs Sports Teams to enable them to bring more glory to the service.

Comptroller General who was represented at the event by the Deputy Comptroller General Enforcement Inspection and Investigation Abba Kura charged the team to go to Egypt and make Nigeria proud.

He said: “For this tournament, they have done well, the Service is going to encourage them to do more, I pray for them to succeed in Egypt, and to come back with the trophy to Nigeria.

“It has been a tradition of the Nigeria Customs Service to encourage officers who participate actively in sports, apart from that, we encourage all our teams in all sports and make sure that they succeed in any event they participate.”
