Nigeria qualify for U20 AFCON, set up WAFU B U20 final date with rivals Benin

Nigeria qualified for the Total Energies U20 Africa Cup of Nations following a 2-1 extra time victory extra time over Cote d’Ivoire in the semi-final in Niger on Tuesday.

The victory also confirmed the Flying Eagles passage to the WAFU B U20 qualifiers final, where they will face neighbours Benin in the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship on Friday.

Earlier, Benin stunned Burkina Faso 2-1 in the first game of the day at the Seyni Kountche Stadium.

On the day, Nigeria got off to flying start when they took advantage of an error by the Ivorian goalkeeper to open the scoring early in the game through Daniel Daga’s goal on fourth minute.

The Ivorians attempted to respond several times but Abdoulaye Djire (29th) and Abdramane Konate (30th) did not take advantage of the opportunities.

Just before the break Seydou Traoré, the Elephants’ striker, got the Ivorians back into the game when he combined effectively with his midfielders to restore parity.

Later, both teams failed to add more before the end of regulation time, the Nigerians dragged the encounter into extra time before winning a penalty following a foul on Onuché Ogbelu and the resultant penalty was converted by Ibrahim Yahaya to restore earn the winner.

Nigerian star Daniel Daga was named Man of the Match following his contributions and goal in the contest.
