Nigeria sprinter Olayinka Olajide calls out Sports Minister on disparities in training grants

Nigerian sprinter Olayinka Olajide has taken to social media to voice her concerns about the unequal distribution of training grants among athletes.

The 21-year-old Olympian’s comment comes on the heels of the Sports Minister John Owan Enoh’s announcement of grants paid to all athletes on Tuesday.

While applauding the initiative, Olajide in her swift message directed at the Sports Ministry boss on X, recounted the significant financial disparities faced by locally-based athletes compared to their foreign-based counterparts.

“The session was indeed interactive, and we appreciate the transparency and full responsibility your office holds, Sir,” Olajide began, acknowledging the Minister’s efforts.

However, she quickly shifted focus to the financial inequity, stating, “There should be no segregation when it comes to training grants. We all are Nigerian athletes, and we deserve a full right.”

Olajide pointed out that local athletes receive only 20% of the financial support given to those based abroad, a disparity that she believes is unjust.

She emphasized that there are no special benefits or considerations for local athletes from either the state or the federation, which adds to their financial burdens.

“There is no *naija price* or special treatment to get the necessary things we need as local based athletes!!!” she asserted.

Her message underscores a broader call for equity, urging the Minister to address and rectify these disparities.

“It would be well appreciated if our request is considered and carefully looked into,” Olajide concluded.

The post has garnered significant attention, resonating with many who support the push for fair treatment and equal opportunities for all Nigerian athletes. The sports community now awaits a response from Minister Enoh.
