Nigeria U17 will take a narrow advantage back to Niger Republic after Tobi Alagbe’s first half goal sealed a 1-0 first-leg win in the 2017 U17 Africa Cup of Nations first round qualifier in Abuja.

Coach Manu Garba declared before the game that his Boys will put up a great showing to make the second leg a mere formality, but that was not the case as the reigning world champions after taking the lead in the second minute put every foot wrong.

The hosts had a chance to double their in the 26th minute but his low shot outside the penalty area went wide.

Although Nigeria played better, they were made to survive some moment of panic when a Menas striker fired straight at goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleke from 20 yards after picking out a defender.

The remainder of the game proved largely uneventful with the Golden Eaglets seemingly content to protect their lead, leaving the tie firmly in the balance heading into the return leg in eight days’ time.
