NLC Mourns Death of Former Speaker Ghali Na’abba

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed sadness over the death of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’abba.

Na’abba died on Wednesday in Abuja after battling an undisclosed illness. His body was flown to Kano State where he was buried the same day.

In a statement by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC described the late lawmaker as a fine gentleman who sacrificed for Nigeria’s democracy.

The labour union said Na’abba would be remembered for thwarting the third term agenda of some politicians during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

According to the NLC, Na’abba paid dearly for his role by not returning to parliament, but he did not lose his national relevance and status.

It stated that beyond opposing the third term, Na’abba repeatedly held the executive accountable, almost impeaching the President.

The NLC mourned Na’abba as a principled politician, hero of democracy and one of the greatest leaders it has worked with.

It acknowledged his contributions to deepening democracy and good governance in the country.
