NSC Shifts Youth Games To Dec, Reduces Events
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has shifted the date for the maiden edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), earlier slated for September to December, 2013.
Disclosing this in Abuja yesterday, the Director in charge of the Grassroots Sports Development (GRSD) in the Commission, Mallam Yakmut Al-Hassan said the change is to afford the host adequate time to prepare in line with the new sports approved for the Games.
According to Yakmut, in a statement signed by the Director of Press in the Commission Mr. Tony Ohaeri, the joint MOC/LOC and State Directors of Sports meeting will hold between August 27-30 while entries by number and name is scheduled for September 16 to October 1.
He also announced that zonal eliminations will take place from October 28 to November 3, delegates registration/joint technical meeting has been fixed for November 11- 20, while the games proper will hold between December 5 to 15.
Meanwhile, Yakmut said the number of sports approved for the games has been reduced from 19 to 15.
He named the sports as badminton, basketball, boxing, table tennis, taekwondo, football, track & field, judo, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, handball, tennis, karate and para power-lifting.
The National Council on Sports during its meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State last April ratified the hosting of the National Youth Games and consequently directed the composition of a Modalities Committee to develop an operational framework for the games.
