The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), on Tuesday, says it invited four players to camp ahead of the Cameroon International Table Tennis Open Championships billed to hold from August 10 to 11.

According to the coach of the federation, Nasiru Bello, the players – Kazim Makanjuola, Hammed Taiwo (male), Funmilola Ajala and Sidi Yayah – were selected based on their performances in previous competitions.

“We called the players to camp to prepare them ahead of the event. They were selected based on their past performances and we just need to work a little on their tactics.

“Some of them excelled at this year’s National Table Tennis Championships in Abuja, while some did well at the Redeemed U-21 Table Tennis Open Championships at the Redemption camp,’’ he said.

Bello said that the invitational championships would also be used to prepare the players as part of the build-up to the maiden Lagos International Table Tennis Championships scheduled for August 26 in Lagos.

“We want to use the competition in Cameroon to encourage the players and for them to compete with players around the continent before the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“Taking all these players for such competitions will help to select good ones for major future international tournaments,’’ he said.

Bello said the training schedule for the players would be done in a manner that would not affect those who are observing the ongoing Ramadan fast.
