NYG2013: Cross River State Boxers Dominate Event

Cross River state athletes were exceptional on ThurNYGsday as three of their boxers dominated in three categories of the final results of the boxing event released at the on-going National Youth Games (NYG).

The Cross riverians punched their way to the top after David David, Ekire Paul and Asa Etim punched their ways to victory in their final bouts on Thursday.

David David had it raw with Lawson Sakirudeen from Osun state but later secured a 2-1 split decision from the judges to win the 51 kg category bout.

Ekire Paul humbled his opponent Wasiu Aderemi from Kwara through a unanimous decision in the 54 kg, while Asa Etim won through a technical knockout against Maxwell Caroline (Delta) in the Female 57 kg, to make it three wins in three boxing finals for Cross River.

Delta State registered its name with two wins which were provided by two female boxers, Ekpelimode Sophia in the 51 kg category and Okoro Avwerosho in the 54 kg.

Sophia won her match against her opponent, Ewah Jenny, from Cross river through a unanimous decision, while Avwerosho brushed aside Ikoko Mercy from Bayelsa through technical knockout.

Gombe, Akwa Ibom and Rivers also got their names registered on the champions list.

While Benard Kayode (Gombe) won his opponent Onukwa Stanley (Enugu) to win the final of the male 57 kg, Akpan Joshua (Akwa Ibom) knocked out Agbo Kenechukwu (Enugu) to win the male 60 kg bout.

Rivers got its name on the champions list without throwing a punch, as no contestant showed up in the final match against the Rivers state boxer, Precious Tameno.

The final result showed that three female boxers emerged as champions in the boxing event, while five male boxers emerged.
