NYG2013: Sokoto to lock horns with Niger in Handball final

NYGSokoto State Handball team has set up a lucrative final match against Niger State after defeating Abia State in a semi-final match decided at the Package B section of the Abuja National Stadium on Wednesday.

Sokoto who ended the first half 11:11 in their game against Abia, showed endurance in the second half to end it 24:19.

However, It was a one way traffic for Niger State in the second semi-final match also decided on Wednesday.

The boys from the North-Central State whitewashed Rivers State 32:18 in a match which they showed their superiority from start to finish.

It would be recalled that Niger had beaten Sokoto State at the group stage of the competition. They ran out 24:16 winners in a one-sided match on Monday.

Captain of the Niger State side, Mohammed Anan expressed optimism that his team will win the final that will take place on Thursday.

He said his team has improved since the two first met and will unleash all in its arsenal against Sokoto on Thursday.

“We will train hard and by the grace of God, we will win tomorrow.”

Abia State will play Rivers in the third place match that will also come up on Thursday.

In the Female category, Benue State wallop Federal Capital Territory 16:4 in one of the semi-final matches to set up a duel with Imo State who managed a 14:12 win over Beyelsa State.

The final will be a rematch between the two heavyweights having met earlier in the group stage with Benue State coming top on that occasion.

The two losers- Bayelsa and FCT will battle for the third place tomorrow, Thursday December 12, 2013.
