Assist Oshoala’s brace help Super Falcons defeat Rwanda 4-1 in Gisenyi

Assist Oshoala grabbed a brace as the Nigeria’s senior women’s team defeated Rwanda 4-1 in a first leg, second round of the African Women’s Championship (AWC) qualifier at the Gisenyi City Stadium on Saturday.

Falcons started the game on the front foot but failed to find a breakthrough after many missed chances until the 37th minute when Asisat Oshoala who secured the winning goal against Cameroon in Abuja, had her volley inside the box find the back of the net.

Incredibly, three minutes later, Desire Oparanozie set up Asisat to double the lead for the six-time African winner before half time.

On resuming the other half, Edwin Okon’s side slot home the thied after Esther Sunday beat Rwanda goalkeeper who was constantly troubled with a low shot with a through pass from captain Evelyn Nwabuoku.

For a consolation, the hosts pulled one back in the 65th minute after Clementine Mukamana’s free kick was far from veteran Precious Dede’s reach to make 3-1.

However, the unsatisfied Nigerian girls never relented on pounding their host as Oparanozie who was brought down inside the box, rose quickly to grab the fourth goal from the spot for the Super Falcons.

Nigeria will host their Rwandan counterparts in the second leg, second round match is scheduled for 6 June 2014 in Abuja.

Victory against Rwanda will see Nigeria qualify for the 9th African Women’s Championship (AWC) which holds in Namibia from 11–25 October 2014 and serves up as the qualifier for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.
