Police in Oyo State have launched a manhunt for two wounded members of a five-man robbery gang terrorising users of the popular Ibadan/Ijebu-Ode Road, following the killing of three members of the gang by the police.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr.Mohammed Katsina, confirmed the development yesterday in Ibadan through the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adekunle Ajisebutu.

The police chief revealed that members of the robbery gang have been terrorising traders, commuters and others at the Idi-Ayunre axis of the road.

According to the police chief, luck ran out on the gang shortly after they had robbed a couple travelling along the road.

Newswatch Times reports that the couple, one Mr.Jaiyeola Olawuyi and his wife, who were travelling to Ijebu-Ode in their Toyota Corolla car, ran into a barricade put up by the gang.

The couple were reportedly dispossessed of money and jewelries while members of the gang also inflicted several matchet cuts on them, leading to their admission (the couple) in a private hospital.

The police officer said: “With the help of our robust intelligence network, the Command Ambush Squad, comprising well trained personnel from the Idi-Ayunre Division, swooped on them (suspected armed robbers)during one of their operations on April 23, 2015, at about 22:48hrs and terminated their existence from society.

“During a fierce battle arising from exchange of fire, three of them were killed while others escaped with bullet wounds. Exhibits recovered from them include two wooden guns wrapped with black cello-tape, a cutlass, gold jewelry and two torches. The Command enjoins hospitals and traditional healing homes to report anyone with bullet wounds immediately to the police.”

Corpses of the slain suspected armed robbers, already deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital at Yemetu, also in Ibadan, were also displayed to newsmen yesterday.
