Peseiro makes Afcon title promise to Nigeria after landing Super Eagles job

Jose Peseiro has vowed to help win the fourth Africa Cup of Nations title for Nigeria after agreeing terms to handle the Super Eagles, beginning at the Afcon Cote d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers next month.

The Nigeria Football Federation recently announced the Portuguese as the country’s national team coach on at least a one-year deal and the 62-year old is set to oversee his first set of matches, beginning with the friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador national teams in the United States.

With dreams of Qatar 2022 World Cup ruined by Ghana, the Super Eagles will shift focus on initially securing a qualification ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before harbouring hopes of winning it.

In the aftermath, he will lead the Super Eagles in his first competitive match against the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone few days later and he has expressed his excitement at the prospect of handling ‘one of the greatest football nations in the world’.

“Pride! It is with great pride and joy that I am the coach of one of the greatest football nations in the world,” newly appointed Nigeria coach Peseiro wrote on twitter.

“Commanding the Super Eagles starts with knowing how to respect the history, value it and be inspired by its roots.”

“Over 200 million Nigerians, from all states and ethnicities, want the same thing: success.

“We will work with great ambition, so that in the end we can finally call Nigeria the “four-time African champions”!”

He will be assisted by former Nigeria international forward, Finidi George and Salisu Yusuf as his first and second assistants respectively while Usman Abdallah his third assistant, Eboboritse Uwejamomere as the match analyst and another former international, Ike Shorounmu the goalkeepers’ trainer.
